The participants at the afternoon session of the Sixth Ministerial Conference “Environment for Europe” came to the conclusion that since the Fifth Conference held in Kiev, till today a progress in the environment protection was made and that such efforts should be continued.

It was estimated that the implementation of the international agreements had significant influence on the relations between the countries in the region regarding the environmental problems and that countries with economies in the transition gave their contribution to the perception and assessment of the actual state in this area. It was emphasized that the commitments adopted in Kiev were the guidelines in the development of the policy for the environment protection in such countries.

The participants also emphasized the importance of the cooperation between the countries gathered through the process “Environment for Europe” and the significance of the exchange of experience, in order to achieve better results in building capacities and in the implementation of the strategies for the environment protection.

Serbian and Slovenian ministers of environmental protection, Saša Dragin and Janez Podobnik are to sign the memorandum of cooperation and understanding in the field of the environmental protection between the countries on October 12, at 15.00 at Belgrade City Hall. Serbian Minister of Environmental Protection Saša Dragin and Parliament Speaker of the National Assembly Oliver Dulic are inviting media representatives to a cocktail, which will be organized today, on 11 October at 8 pm, in the National Assembly Hall. Ministers, chief of delegations and high officials, participants of the Sixth Ministerial Conference, are invited to the cocktail, too.

For your convenience, the buses will be waiting at 7.30 pm, in front of the Sava Center, entrance B. Media representatives are obliged to bring accreditations for the Sixth Ministerial Conference with them. The Serbian Minister of Environmental Protection Saša Dragin and the Executive secretary of UNECE Marek Belka are inviting all media representatives to join them at the Media Center on October 12, at 13.00 at the summary press conference.

Messieurs Dragin and Belka will discuss about main messages of the Conference. In the second part of the afternoon session, Education and Environment Ministers, who for the first time participate together in this process, adopted the Draft Statement on the Education for Sustainable Development.

Mr. Zoran Lončar, Minister of Education of the Republic of Serbia, welcomed the participants of this session and said that he considered the education as the pillar of the strategy of sustainable development. Teachers’ training, improvement of the teaching tools and of the curricula, represents only the beginning in the realization of the Strategy, whose final goal is to raise consciousness on the importance of education for sustainable development. Jacqueline Cramer, the Minister of Housing, Land Management and Environment of the Netherlands, presented key results in the implementation of the UNECE Strategy on the education for sustainable development. “Information sharing between the countries which take part in the implementation process of this Strategy resulted in the visible positive effects.

The progress made is evident, but the final goal hasn’t been achieved yet”, said the Minister Cramer. In the evening hours, the participants of the Conference adopted the Statement on the importance of the conservation of biodiversity for the environment as a whole. “The biodiversity is one of the most important pillars for the future, and we believe that this Conference will be a step forward in the realization of broad partnerships between all stakeholders,” said Hellen Odveig Biornoi, the Environment Minister of the Kingdom of Norway.

In the evening hours, also, on the panel discussion dedicated to the problems of biodiversity the report called “Measurements taking” was presented, made by the Pan European Ecological Network, and it was announced that the Conference on the high level will be held, in Lisbon, on 12th and 13th of November, and the theme of this Conference will be the biodiversity and the business.

Please be sure to credit IISD for all photos downloaded from the website. 10th October The Serbian Ministry of Environmental Protection invites all representatives of the media to cover the event “Planting for Environment” scheduled for Thursday, October 11, at 8.30 am. During the event the Serbian minister Saša Dragin and his counterparts, ministers who hosted previous conferences in the process “Environment for Europe” will plant six trees as a symbol of the six conferences of environmental protection.

The trees will be planted in the Park of Friendship situated between the building of the Federation Palace and the building of the former Central Committee (CK) in New Belgrade. There will be two buses to transport all media representatives who wish to cover the event. The buses will wait for journalists at 8.15 in front of the Ceremonial Entrance of the Sava Center, in the Milentija Popovica Street.

The buses will wait for journalists to transport them back to the Conference Hall where the plenary session starts at 9 am.
